His exasperated AL colleagues vote 9-1 that KC’s offer is reasonable. Finley will move the team out of KC as soon as the lease expires after the 1967 season.

For the second time in two years – the first was on May 25, 1908 – Bill Burns has a no-hitter broken up with two outs in the 9th, when Washington’s Otis Clymer singles. But Burns and the White Sox win, 1 – 0, besting Walter Johnson in the first of two games. Burns is the only pitcher to suffer this fate twice, until Dave Stieb of Toronto does on September 24 and 30, 1988.

July 31, 1909

The Yankees trade four minor leaguers, shortstop C.J. Henry, southpaw reliever Matt Smith, catcher Jesus Sanchez, and right-hander Carlos Monasterios, to the Phillies in exchange for All-Star outfielder Bobby Abreu and veteran pitcher Cory Lidle. New York will assume responsibility of Abreu’s contract, which includes the remaining portion of the $13.5 million for this season, $15.5 million for next year, and a $16 million option for 2008 with a $2 million buyout.
