On May 4, 1984, Dave Kingman of the Oakland A’s hits a ball through the roof of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Kingman’s fly ball goes through a drainage hole in the roof and never returns to the playing field. much to the surprise of the Twins infielders, John Casino and Houston Jimenez waiting to make the catch, the ball doesn’t drop back into play.
The umpires award Kingman with a ground-rule double, the ball will stay put in the lining of the dome until tomorrow. The Twins win the game 3-1, with 24-year-old Frank Viola picking up his 2nd win on the season, en route to an 18 win campaign.
