On July 4,1972 Denny McLain makes his National League debut in the second game of a twinbill with the Cubs, called in the 8th inning because of rain. McLain gets no decision in the 3 – 3 tie, but receives a standing ovation at the end from the crowd of 50,597. Atlanta wins the opener, 5 – 1, as Ron Reed beats Juan Pizarro. Paul Casanova’s first National League homer and Mike Lum’s three-run homer in the 7th account for four runs.
1983 – Matt Albers is born in Houston, TX. The righthanded prospect compiles a 4-13 record playing for his hometown team over parts of two seasons (2006,2007) before being dealt to Baltimore.

At Candlestick Park, Geoff Jenkins hits a home run off Orel Hershiser to become the first Milwaukee Brewers player to hit a home run in his major league debut. The Brewers defeat the Giants, 7 – 5. Jenkins joins Chuck Tanner, who accomplished the feat in 1955 as a member of the Milwaukee Braves, as the only players in Milwaukee baseball history to homer in their first game.

Mike Lum hits three homers as the Braves beat the Padres, 8 – 1, in the first game of a doubleheader. The Braves continue hitting in game two to win, 9 – 4.

Joe Medwick collects his tenth consecutive hit to tie a National League record shared by Ed Konetchy, Kiki Cuyler, and Chick Hafey when he singles off Carl Hubbell in the sixth inning of the Cardinals’ 2-1 loss to the Giants at Polo Grounds. The 24-year-old Cardinals slugger, called Ducky by his teammates, had seven hits in his last seven times at-bat in the doubleheader sweep of the Boston Bees at Sportsman’s Park before yesterday’s off-day.
