Don Sutton and Paul Molitor help Brewers stave off elimination in ALCS

October 8, 1982 – At County Stadium, game 3 of the ALCS, the pitching of veteran Don Sutton going 7+ innings allowing 3 runs‚ and a 2-run home run by Paul Molitor off Mike Witt‚ stave off elimination in the Brewers’ game against California. The Brewers dropped the first 2 games of a best of 5 in California.

A little controversy in the 7th, when a fan reached over the railing and caught the ball as LF Ben Oglivie was getting into position to catch it. LF umpire Larry Barnett ruled it a home run (after seeing the replay after the game Barnett said that he should have called Boone out on fan interference), if that had been called correctly Sutton would not have given up a run for the Brewers. Oglivie was stunned when he didn’t catch the ball as it was practically in his glove and was perplexed why a home fan would do such a thing.
