The  first great Pittsburgh Pirates prospect was born on this date in 1859. Ed Swartwood was a rookie with one game of big league experience when the Pittsburgh Alleghenys played their first game on May 2, 1882. He became the first batter in franchise history that day, and would go on to lead the league in both runs and doubles. The following season, he won the first batting title in franchise history with his .357 average.
