Edwin Rodriguez, who became the first Puerto Rican manager in major league history last week, wins a game in front of his countrymen as the Marlins defeat the Mets, 10 – 3, at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is the first major league game played in the stadium since the MLB-owned Montreal Expos were forced to move a number of home games there in 2003 and 2004. A crown of more than 18,000 is on hand for the historic game. With Bobby Valentine turning down an offer to manage the Marlins, Rodriguez will be confirmed as Florida’s skipper for the remainder of the season.

The Court of Appeals upholds the ban prohibiting Sunday amusements in Washington D.C, after the law, which would have allowed the playing of baseball on this day of the week, had previously been overturned. The Senators, during the brief legal interval, had still decided against scheduling games on the day of worship out of fear it might alienate its church-going fans, and will not play its first home game on a Sunday until 1918.

David Price is selected this season’s recipient of the Warren Spahn Award, a recognition given annually to the best left-handed major league pitcher in Major League Baseball by the Oklahoma Sports Museum. The Rays’ 25 year-old All-Star southpaw compiled a 19-6 record along with an ERA of 2.72 for the AL East champs.

The Cubs overcome a 5 – 2 Giants lead to tie the game at 5 – 5‚ but a Johnny Evers error in the 8th gives New York a 6 – 5 win. Christy Mathewson‚ who pitches just 2 and 1/3 innings is credited with the win‚ since he left the game with the Giants ahead. Hooks Wiltse pitches the last 7 1/3 innings. By taking three out of four in Chicago‚ the Giants increase their hold on first place.
