Feisty Umpire Babe Pinelli gets into it with Leo Durocher in 1942. A San Francisco native, the son of Italian immigrants, was born Rinaldo Angelo Paolinelli and spent 8 years in the big leagues as a SS/3rd baseman mainly with the Reds. His hot temper was legendary and he had to tone it down to make the transition to umpire. He is most remembered as the home plate ump during Don Larsen’s perfect game in which he made a questionable strike call on the final pitch. Pinelli’s version was “Larsen hit the corner of the plate with a beautiful fast ball” that was “just high enough. It was easy to call – and I called it.”
