First night game in major league history is played at Crosley Field

On May 24, 1935, the first night game in major league history is played at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. 25,000+ fans showed up and On the initiative of Larry MacPhail, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt pushes a button in the White House, the ballpark is illuminated. After a festive pre-game ceremony, the Reds defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-1. The Phils’ Lou Chiozza is the first batter vs the Reds’ Paul Derringer.

Billy Meyer, doubled to lead off the bottom of the first and came around to score the first run. Derringer started and went the whole way for the Reds surrendering just 4 hits.   The Reds will play seven night games, one each against the other National League teams.
