Gary Matthews wins the National League Rookie of the Year Award

On November 27, 1973 — San Francisco Giants outfielder Gary Matthews, who batted .300 in 145 games, outpolls eight others, receiving 11 of 24 nominations for the National League Rookie of the Year Award.

The runner-up was  Montreal Expos pitcher Steve Rogers (10-5 in 17 starts, 1.54 ERA), 11-3.5 points. In ’73, Sarge had 162 hits, 10 triples, 17 SB, 74 runs, .300 BA, & .367 OBP.
