On April 15, 1967, Gary Nolan made his major league debut at the age of 18 and by pitching seven innings during a 7-3 win over the Astros at Crosley Field.

The Reds number one draft choice in 1966, Nolan was pitching for Oroville High School in Calofornia a year earlier. Mature beyond his years, Nolan was married at 16 and had four children by the tiMe he was 23. In 1967, Nolan was 14-8 with a 2.58 ERA, five shutouts, and 206 strikeouts in 226 2/3 innings. The wins, shutouts, strikeouts and innings are major league records for a pitcher who started a season at 18 or younger in the live ball era (since 1920).
