On August 24, 1980 — Gene Mauch resigns as the manager of the Twins, leaving a team with a 54-71 record that is 26 games out of first place. The ‘Little General’ will be replaced by third base coach John Goryl, who will be given with a one-year contract, after he guides the club to 23 victories, including a 12-game winning streak, in the final 36 games of the season.
