As a ballplayer who began his career as a pitcher, converted into an outfielder, and eventually became an infielder, Frank “Gid” Gardner played portions of seven seasons in the major leagues between 1879 and 1888. He compiled a lifetime batting average of .233 in 199 games played, including 15 games as a pitcher, posting a 2-12 career record.
