On July 19, 1988 — Hanshin Tigers General Manager Shingo Furuya commits suicide, jumping from the 8th floor of a hotel. He was only in his sixth week on the job, but had drawn much criticism for the retirement of fading great Masayuki Kakefu and a dispute between Randy Bass and Hanshin over Bass’s taking a leave of absence to be with his cancer-ridden son.
