Harmon Killebrew powers twins

On July 11, 1969 Harmon Killebrew hits a pair of homers and a double to boost his RBI total to an American League-high 90. The Twins beat the Pilots, 9 – 3.

The 33-year-old slugger has hit nine homers in his last 10 games.

Asked if he felt slighted about being left off the starting A Star team, Killebrew said “Last year I wasn’t doing too well and was named as a start- Boog Powell was having a good year and he was the second string first baseman. He’s doing well again, this year and Powell was named as the starter.”

He will never forget 1969 All Star game, the first baseman pulled a hamstring muscle in Houston, and missed half the season.

He wound up with only 14 home runs and a .210 batting average.

Killebrew already has 27 home runs, is hitting .291 and has played in all 85 Minnesota games. After the injury last he says. “I’m just happy to be playing.”

Calvin Griffith, president of the Twins, knows the priceless value of his slugger. “The government would take more than half the money if we to sell him.”

The victims of Killebrcw’s bat also speak highly of him. “Killebrcw just overpowered us too much long ball,” Seattle Pilot Manager Joe Schultz said.

The Arizona Diamondbacks force their NLDS with Milwaukee to a decisive Game 5 with a 10 – 6 win at home today. The D-Backs use four home runs – a grand slam by Ryan Roberts, two long balls by Chris Young and one by Aaron Hill – to power their way to the win. They jump to a 5 – 0 lead off Randy Wolf in the 1st inning on Roberts’ slam, their second in as many games; the only other team to hit grand slams in back-to-back postseason games was the 1977 Los Angeles Dodgers. Arizona never looks back after its quick start, although starter Joe Saunders struggles and is lifted after three innings; his replacement, Micah Owings, is the winner.
