Harmon Killebrew’s hits his only career inside-the-park homer

On July 4,1961 At Metropolitan Stadium, the Twins sweep a pair from the White Sox, winning the opener, 6 – 4, when Julio Becquer hits a 9th-inning grand slam as a pinch hitter. Cal McLish shuts out the Twins in the second game until the 8th inning when the Twins score four runs, two on Harmon Killebrew’s only career inside-the-park homer, off McLish. It is the Twins’ first inside-the-park home run. They win, 4 – 2, behind Jack Kralick.

For the second time this month, a pitcher beats Brooklyn twice in one day, as the Cardinals’ Bill Doak wins, 2 – 0 and 12 – 4. With his 14th and 15th victories, Doak picked up a bonus check as well. In a salary dispute in the spring, the Cards and Doak agreed upon a bonus if the pitcher reached 15 wins, and another bonus if he won twenty. He’ll win just one more.

September 18, 1917

Barry Bonds slugs three home runs and a double to lead the Giants to a 7 – 4 win over the Rockies. It is the 4th three-homer game of Bonds’s career.

August 27, 2002

1922 – The Wichita Falls Spudders (Texas League)‚ winners of 24 games in a row‚ face a tough opponent in grandfathered Dallas spitballer Snipe Conley. Halfway through the game‚ Conley complains of a burning sensation on his lips and mouth‚ limiting his ability to throw his specialty. The Spudders eventually win‚ 4 – 3‚ but when the ball is examined later it is revealed that a creosote compound was rubbed into the seams‚ Dallas protests the game. League president J. Doak Roberts upholds the protest‚ ending the Spudders’ streak at 24‚ 3 short of the record.
