Harmon Killebrew Griffith Stadium Homeruns

Harmon Killibrew homeruns

October 1, 1959 A rare photo of a young Harmon Killebrew back in his early days as a Washington Senator in 1959, showing where some of his mammoth home runs landed in the distant bleachers of Griffith Stadium. Until 1957 the left field foul pole alone stood at 400 ft away from home plate. In 1945, the only Senator to hit a home run in Griffith Stadium was Joe Kuhel, and it was an inside the park home run. Harmon (a right hander) was the second Senator to hit 40 or more home runs in a season (1959) for the long storied Senator franchise dating back to 1901; Roy Sievers was the first in 1957 and batted left handed. Left field at Griffith Stadium was a more normal distance of 320 with a 30 ft fence.
