On June 30, 1917 Pirates manager Nixey Callahan is fired after his team goes 20-40. Popular star Honus Wagner is named field manager with Hugo Bezdek to take over the team’s business affairs. As his first order of business, Wagner guides to Bucs to a 5 – 4 win over the Reds, contributing a 2-run double as well.
