On September 29, 1968 — In a pregame ceremony with Harry Caray as the master of ceremonies, the Cardinals honor retiring outfielder Roger Maris. The former two-time MVP with the Yankees, who has never had his accomplishments recognized in the Bronx.

Maris, his wife, Pat, and their six children were honored on the field because Roger had announced his retirement effective after the World Series. After thanking the Cardinals for giving his family an electric organ, Maris said, “And I want to thank the Cardinals for two of my most enjoyable years in baseball, and I want to thank the fans here for accepting me the way they did.”

Broadcaster Harry Caray, recalled Maris’s retirement statement, which began, “This will be my last year in baseball.” Said Caray, “With a single sentence, eight short words, he marked the final chapter in one of the game’s most illustrious careers. “But such records tell only the story of Maris the baseball player.

In St. Louis, we’ve also come to know and respect him as Maris the man, a gentleman of warmth and humility, an inspiration to youngsters everywhere, a man who has been genuinely a credit to the game. “Roger, I know I speak for all in saying we feel privileged that you chanced to pass our way, for you have given extra luster to the Cardinal uniform.”

Carl Kunze sang this parody of “Hello Dolly,” written by Dick Renna, whose band entertains Busch Stadium fans regularly: “Goodby, Roger. Well, so long, Roger. It’s been great to have you here two years with us. We tip our hat, Roger, to your bat, Roger, And your glove and arm and all the thrills you gave us. Good luck, Roger, Keep swinging through, Roger, St. Louis won’t forget a guy like you so Here’s a cheer, Roger. Luck with a new career, Roger, St. Louis wishes you happiness.
