On March 3, 1932 — In Century, Florida, Boston Red Sox pitcher Ed “Big Ed” Morris dies at age 32 of knife wounds inflicted in a fight at a party given in his honor two days ago in Brewton, Alabama.
Joe White, of Brewton. Ala., was charged with murder in Morris’ death. Morris received knife wounds near the heart at a fish fry given the night before he was to leave for Savannah. Ha.. to join the Red Sox. His condition became worse yesterday and oxygen was administered
early today in a vain effort to save his life.
White, a filling station operator. was arrested at Brewton shortly after the quarrel but was released on bond. Sheriff S. Burns, hearing Morris was getting worse, rearrested White late yesterday and charged him with first-degree murder after Morris died.
Witnesses of the fight at the fish fry told officers Morris struck White ‘ during an argument, but tripped and fell.
They said while Morris was on the ground White stabbed him several times near the heart.
Boston owner Bob Quinn is reported to have had a New York Yankees offer of almost $100,000 for the pitcher.
