On September 28, 1988 â In Seoul, South Korea, Jim Abbott, born without a right hand, goes the distance en route to a 5-3 victory over Japan to win the Olympic Gold medal for the United States. After the game, the Japanese players, in a display of great respect, line up to congratulate the former University of Michigan pitcher who had just beaten them.
