On August 11, 1963 — In the second game of doubleheader, Auburn’s Paul Alspach strikes out 24 New York-Penn League Pirate batters en route to a 1-0 victory at Batavia’s MacArthur Stadium. The 21 year-old Mets farmhand’s performance breaks the NYPL’s strikeout record of 20, previously shared by Jerry Kleinsmith (Jamestown, 1948) and Ron Owen (Hornell, 1955).
