On September 16, 1987 — Cleveland Indian first baseman Joe Carter, swiping his career-high 30th base, during a 5-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners, becomes the tenth major leaguer to hit 30 home runs and to steal 30 bases in the same season. Although the feat had been accomplished only 11 times prior to this year, four players, including Mets teammates Howard Johnson and Darryl Strawberry along with A’s slugger Jose Canseco, become the newest members of the 30/30 club this season.

With his 30th stolen base, Mets third baseman Howard Johnson becomes the first National League infielder to become a member of the 30-30 club. The other players in the Senior Circuit to have 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in the same season are outfielders Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Bobby Bonds, Dale Murphy, and Eric Davis.

September 11, 1987

In a 6 – 4 defeat to the Reds, Bobby Bonds becomes the fourth player in major league history steal at least 30 bases and hit at least 30 home runs in the same season. The other members of the 30/30 club include Ken Williams (1922 Browns), Willie Mays (1956 & 1957 – Giants) and Hank Aaron (1963 Braves).
