Notable Events and Chronology for (PLAYER) Career

Biography

At the end of his career as an intermittently sore-armed pitcher for second-division clubs, May wound up as a Cubs reliever. In Game Four of the 1932 World Series ā€” the last major league game of his 14-year career ā€” May was hit hard, taking the loss in Game Four. However, he had the satisfaction of twice striking out Babe Ruth that day, after Ruth had humbled the Cubs with his “called home run” in Game Three. The game four loss completed the sweep for the Yankees.

A decade earlier, he won 35 games in one (very long) minor league season. Later a tobacco farmer and the best player to ever hail from Wendell, North Carolina, Jakie May, a 5-foot-8, rotund, and left-handed ā€œWee Carolinian,ā€ is quite the jolly story from over a century ago.
