Jim Merritt debuted with the Minnesota Twins in 1965, he pitched 2 games in relief of the 1965 World Series which the Twins lost to the Dodgers 4-3. In 4 seasons there he pitched to a 37-41 record with a 3.03 ERA. After the 1968 season he was traded to the Reds for Leo Cardenas.

1969 was his first season with the Reds,in it he won 17 lost 9 and had a 4.37 ERA. He was named opening day starter in 1970 and was even better that year, going 20-12 with a 4.08 ERA, after a good performance in the LCS, Merritt gave up 4 earned runs in 1 ⅔ innings in his only start of the World Series. Two subpar seasons followed going 1-11 with a 4.37 ERA in 1971 and pitching only 4 games and starting 1 in 1972.

He was traded to the Rangers where he went 5-13 3.99 ERA in 66 appearances, 20 of those starts over 3 seasons. He was out of the majors after 5 games in 1975.
