Joaquin Andujar hits a grandslam vs the Braves – during his career he never gave up a grandslam

On May 15, 1984 —  At Busch Stadium, the St Louis Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves, 9 – 1, Cardinals starter Joaquin Andujar, a poor hitter, in the bottom of the 8th hits 2 out grand slam off Jeff Dedmon. Just before his blast, Andujar looks into the Cards’ dugout, then gestures to the right-field stands.

“I told (teammates) George (Hendrick) and Tito (Landrum) that I was going to hit a home run,” Andujar told The Sporting News.

Ozzie Smith, watching from second base, confirmed to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he saw Andujar call his shot. “He pointed while he was in the on-deck circle and said he was going to do it,” Smith said. “Can you believe that?”

Said Andujar to the Atlanta Constitution: “Everyone knows that I’m strong.”

Andujar had hit 3 homeruns righthanded during his career and this was the first left handed homerun of his career. Andujar during his career never gave up a grand slam.
