Joe Hornung is released because of unruly tongue

On January 29 1889 — Veteran outfielder Joe Hornung is released by the Boston Beaneaters after eight years with that club. According to The Sporting News, “Ubbo’s unruly tongue was the principal cause of his release.”

Hornung lead the league in at bats, runs and plate apperances during his career. He will play two more full seasons before retiring.
