On June 20, Joe West becomes the third umpire in major league history to work 5,000 regular season games when he is behind the plate in a game between the Diamondbacks and Rockies. Neither team existed when he began his career in the National League back in 1976. His 40 seasons as an umpire are a record, and he trails only Bill Klem and Bruce Froemming for the total number of games.
