July 12 1955 All Star Game – through 6+ innings

History of the MLB All-Star game – 1955

National League 6,

American League 3 (12 inn.)

The ’55 classic reflected what was happening in the larger scheme of All-Star competition: The American League jumped out to an early, substantial lead, then watched as the Nationals began a late, triumphant comeback.

The game was played on July 12, the day on which funeral services were held for Arch Ward, the Chicago Tribune sports editor who founded the game.

The AL seemed to be cruising with a 5-0 lead through six. The NL chipped away with two in the seventh and tied it with three in the eighth. Frank Sullivan (AL) and Joe Nuxhall matched goose eggs as an All-Star Game went into extra innings for only the second time.

Leading off for the NL in the bottom of the 12th was Stan Musial, who said to AL catcher Yogi Berra, “I’m getting tired.”

“Me, too,” replied Yogi, who was catching the entire game for the fifth straight year.

Sullivan’s first pitch was a fastball; it was Musial’s ticket out of there.

“I never even looked back,” Sullivan said. “As soon as he hit it, I knew that was that.”

The homer was Musial’s fourth in All-Star Games, breaking a tie with Ted Williams and Ralph Kiner.
