July 6 1942 All Star Game
The 10th All-Star Game was played July 6, 1942, at New York’s Polo Grounds and by that time, the United States had been at war for seven months. Enlistments and the draft had not yet begun the serious depletion of big-league rosters that would take place over the next several years, but enough major leaguers had entered the service to warrant a game on July 7 in Cleveland between the winning All-Star team and the Service All-Stars, with proceeds going to the Army-Navy relief fund.
In New York, AL manager Joe McCarthy and NL manager Leo Durocher went at the game with different philosophies. Durocher used virtually his whole squad, 22 players. McCarthy played only 11. McCarthy used only two pitchers; Durocher used four.
Lou Boudreau led off with a home run, and Tommy Henrich doubled. Mort Cooper retired Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio, but Rudy York sliced a low shot down the right-field line into the bleachers. The AL led, 3-0, and went on to win for the seventh time in 10 All-Star Games.
