He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 1st round (5th) of the 1986 MLB June Amateur Draft.

Ohio native Kent Mercker played 18 years in the Majors, playing for nine different teams. He played parts of five seasons in Cincinnati, 1997, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2008. While in Cincinnati he pitched in 207 games with a record of 13 – 15.

While with the Braves he pitched in two no-hitters. On September 11, 1991 he combined with Mark Wohlers and Alejandro Pena to no-hit the Padres. Then on April 8, 1994 he threw a no-hitter against the Dodgers.

In 2009 he became an occasional broadcaster on Reds radio and television broadcasts.
