On May 7, 2010, Lance Orton and Duane Jackson, who were instrumental foiling a terrorist’s attempt to set off a car bomb in Times Square, are honored at Citi Field prior to the Mets game against San Francisco. The two street vendors alerted the police after they observed a parked car on 45th Street had started to fill with smoke and was making popping sounds.
1965 – Roy Hofheinz fires manager Lum Harris (65-97). Grady Hatton takes over as skipper of the Astros.

1961 – Rumors swirl that legendary manager Leo Durocher, currently a coach with the Dodgers, would be named the first manager of the new Houston franchise. Reports of phone conversations between Durocher and General Manager Gabe Paul are true but nothing materializes beyond that. Durocher would eventally lead the club in 1972 after several years as skipper of the Cubs.

In the bottom of the ninth, Johnny Frederick hits his major league record-setting sixth pinch-homer of the season, giving the Dodgers a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. The Brooklyn outfielder’s major league mark will not be broken for 68 years until another Dodger, Dave Hansen, strokes seven round-trippers coming off the bench in 2000.

1927 – Pitcher Herb Pennock is handed an 8 – 0 lead and takes a perfect game into the 8th inning. The New York Yankees lefthander retires Glenn Wright, but Pie Traynor breaks the spell with a single and Clyde Barnhart doubles him home. Pennock settles for a three-hit, 8 – 1, victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates to give the Yankees a commanding 3-0 edge in the World Series.
