Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser becomes the 9th unanimous choice as Cy Young Award winner

On November 10, 1988 — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser, who posted a 23-8 record with 178 strikeouts and a 2.26 ERA, is a unanimous choice as Cy Young Award winner. Hershiser becomes the ninth pitcher in National League history to win the award unanimously. He receives all twenty-four first place votes from the Baseball Writers Association of America. The 29 year-old right-hander, known as the ‘Bulldog’ to his teammates, is the only player to win the Cy Young Award, the NLCS MVP Award, and the World Series MVP Award during the same season.
