On June 11, 1969, the Los Angeles Dodgers reacquire former star Maury Wills and Manny Mota in a four-player trade with the Montreal Expos for infielder Paul Popovich and outfielder Ron Fairly. As a member of the Dodgers during the 1962 season, Wills set a major league record by stealing 104 bases.
The Expos then send Popovich to the Cubs for OF Adolfo Phillips and P Jack Lamabe. Adolfo‚ popular with his teammates shakes hands with everyone while leaving‚ except manager Leo Durocher. Chicago’s latest infielder, a solid switch-hitting utility player, will play a large role for his new team, filling in for injured second baseman Glenn Beckert and batting .312 overall in 60 games.
