On June 22, 1984, the Los Angeles Dodgers release longtime major league outfielder Rick Monday, ending his 19 year career as a player. Monday, who was the first-ever pick in the inaugural amateur draft of 1965, will eventually become an announcer with the San Diego Padres before returning to the Dodgers as a broadcaster.
