Lou Brock hits a walk off single in extra innings as Cardinals open new Busch Stadium

 

 

On May 12, 1966, At Busch Stadium the St. Louis Cardinals play the first game in the history of the new Busch Memorial Stadium.  St. Louis wins the game in 12 innings – a 4-3 decision over the Atlanta Braves.

Felipe Alou hits two home runs for the Braves. The Braves were up 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th but the Cardinals rallied to tie the game. Alex Johnson singled and took second on an error and will come around to score on Jerry Buchek’s single. 

Future Hall of Famers squared off in the bottom of the 12th, Phil Niekro had loaded the bases and Lou Brock who had been benched and was slumping came up. Niekro stuck with a down and in knuckleball hoping to get a double play. Brock singled up the middle on a ball Niekro felt he should of had.
