lou gehrigOn June 19, 1903 in Manhattan’s East Harlem neighborhood, a baby boy weighing nearly 14-pounds becomes the second child of four born to German immigrants Heinrich and Christina Gehrig. They will name their only surviving child Lou. The “Iron Horse” will make his major league debut with the New York Yankees in 1923. He will eventually become New York’s everyday first baseman, replacing Wally Pipp. He will be lauded for his durability that results in playing 2,130 consecutive games with the Yankees, and for his courage battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease which will come to bear his name. He will be elected into Baseball’s Hall of Fame and is considered the greatest firstbaseman of All Time.
