Lou Gehrig is elected to the Hall of Fame

On December 7, 1939 — Lou Gehrig, age 36, who played in his last major league game on June 30 this season, is elected to the Hall of Fame. Due to the New York Yankees first baseman’s diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the five-year waiting rule is waived, he is this year’s sole choice to be elected.
