Major League baseball returns to Brooklyn for a day when the Mets appear at KeySpan Park

On March 30, 2003 — Major League baseball returns to Brooklyn for a day when the Mets appear at KeySpan Park, the Coney Island home of the short-season single-A Cyclones, for the team’s final preseason workout. Although the practice session is rained out, fans enjoy meeting the players and collecting autographs, with the profits made from beverage and other sales being donated charities in the NYC area serving children.

Luis González of the Arizona Diamondbacks doubles to become the 21st major leaguer with 300 home runs and 500 doubles, as the Diamondbacks defeat San Francisco, 7 – 4. Gonzalez joins a list led by Hank Aaron, who hit 755 homers and 624 doubles. The only other active player in the group is Barry Bonds, who hits his 567th double in the game.

7/1/1926 – In the bottom of the first inning at Braves Field, Doc Gautreau was on second with two out. Eddie Brown walked but the Phillies pointed out that he had batted out of turn. Thus, Dick Burrus, who was the correct batter, was declared out and the Braves stranded Gautreau at second. The Braves eventually won the contest by scoring three runs in the seventh frame.

July 1, 1926

Padres rookie Butch Metzger (10-0) is credited with a 4 – 3 victory over the Astros‚ his 10th win without a defeat. With a victory in each of the previous two seasons as well‚ Metzger’s mark of 12-0 to start a career matches Hooks Wiltse‚ in 1904. Metzger will lose his last four decisions this year.
