On January 17 1970 — Major league teams select a record 357 players in the January phase of the annual free-agent draft, including top pick Chris Chambliss, by Cleveland, and Chris Speier.

The Yankees draft Fred Lynn in the third round of the January phase of the free-agent draft, but the El Monte High School senior chooses to attend USC on a scholarship to play football… The 17 year-old Californian, who will join the Trojan’s baseball squad in his freshman year. He will be drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 2nd round of the 1973 MLB June Amateur Draftbecomes the first player in MLB history to win the MVP and Rookie of the Year awards in the same season while playing for the 1975 Red Sox.
