Manny Ramirez hits Josias Manzanillo hit the groin with a 107 mph line drive

On April 8, 1997 — In a 14-8 Seattle Mariners victory over the Indians at the Kingdome, M’s pitcher Josias Manzanillo, who doesn’t wear a protective cup, is hit the groin by a Manny Ramirez 107 mph line drive. In 1997, Manzanillo managed to recover the baseball, throw out Jim Thome at home plate and jog off the field under his own power before undergoing emergency reconstructive surgery.

Now a firm believer in the use of protective gear, the 29-year-old reliever was put on the 15-day disabled list for surgery needed to repair a tear in his testicles. He has since been named the most courageous player in Seattle Mariners history.

Earlier in the game David Segui launched a blast off Hideki Irabu that appeared to be his fifth home run of the season. However, the ball hit a speaker that hangs 132 feet above the field in deep right-center and Segui had to settle for a triple.
