1899 – At the National League meeting in New York, an attempt to expel the St. Louis Browns, who had a 39-111 record in 1898, fails by a 7-4 margin. It is also decided that no club may hold more than 18 players on its reserve list. St. Louis will play as the “Perfectos” in the upcoming season.

March 2, 1899

The Pirates’ Elmer Steele throws just 72 pitches in subduing the Dodgers, 9 – 0. Steele gives up no walks and has no strikeouts, and allows just one hit – a one-out 9th-inning single to light-hitting Tex Erwin. Brooklyn so admires the feat they obtain him on September 16th, but he never wins another game in the majors.

August 13, 1911

The Blue Jays continue their cursed beginning to the season, losing SS Jose Reyes when he suffers an ankle injury sliding into second base on a stolen base attempt in the 6th inning of today’s game with the Royals. He is expected to be out for three months. The Jays win, 8 – 4, but the loss of Reyes casts a huge pall on celebrations.
