April 29, 1986 ā Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mario Sotocruised through the first three innings of a game at Riverfront Stadium, Then in the fourth inning he ties the Major League record by surrendering four home runs to Andre Dawsonā Hubie Brooksā Tim Wallachā and Mike Fitzgerald in the 7-4 loss to the Montreal Expos.
Dawson and Brooks opened the fourth with back-to-back solo homers to erase a 1-0 Redsā lead, their sixth and fifth home runs, respectively. One out later, Tim Wallach hit his third of the year to make it 3-1. Following Al Newmanās single, Fitzgerald connected for his homer, giving Montreal a 5-1 lead.
āWe put the big bombers on them today,ā said Montreal manager Buck Rodgers. āThere were some shots going out of here. I donāt know if Iāve ever seen four home runs in an inning, but I called three in a row once when I was catching.ā
The last player to give up four homers in an inning was Milwaukeeās Mike Caldwell in 1980, and the last National League pitcher to do it was Brooklynās Ben Wade in 1954.
