Â
April 29, 1986 â Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mario Sotocruised through the first three innings of a game at Riverfront Stadium, Then in the fourth inning he ties the Major League record by surrendering four home runs to Andre Dawsonâ Hubie Brooksâ Tim Wallachâ and Mike Fitzgerald in the 7-4 loss to the Montreal Expos.
Dawson and Brooks opened the fourth with back-to-back solo homers to erase a 1-0 Redsâ lead, their sixth and fifth home runs, respectively. One out later, Tim Wallach hit his third of the year to make it 3-1. Following Al Newmanâs single, Fitzgerald connected for his homer, giving Montreal a 5-1 lead.
âWe put the big bombers on them today,â said Montreal manager Buck Rodgers. âThere were some shots going out of here. I donât know if Iâve ever seen four home runs in an inning, but I called three in a row once when I was catching.â
The last player to give up four homers in an inning was Milwaukeeâs Mike Caldwell in 1980, and the last National League pitcher to do it was Brooklynâs Ben Wade in 1954.
