Mario Soto ties the Major League record by surrendering Four home runs in an inning

April 29, 1986 – Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mario Sotocruised through the first three innings of a game at Riverfront Stadium, Then in the fourth inning he ties the Major League record by surrendering four home runs to Andre Dawson‚ Hubie Brooks‚ Tim Wallach‚ and Mike Fitzgerald in the 7-4 loss to the Montreal Expos.

Dawson and Brooks opened the fourth with back-to-back solo homers to erase a 1-0 Reds’ lead, their sixth and fifth home runs, respectively. One out later, Tim Wallach hit his third of the year to make it 3-1. Following Al Newman’s single, Fitzgerald connected for his homer, giving Montreal a 5-1 lead.

‘We put the big bombers on them today,’ said Montreal manager Buck Rodgers. ‘There were some shots going out of here. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen four home runs in an inning, but I called three in a row once when I was catching.’

The last player to give up four homers in an inning was Milwaukee’s Mike Caldwell in 1980, and the last National League pitcher to do it was Brooklyn’s Ben Wade in 1954.
