On March 29, 1975 — Mel Stottlemyre, suffering from a torn rotator cuff, is given his unconditional release by the Yankees. The team’s future pitching coach compiled a 164-139 record and a 2.97 ERA, tossing 152 complete games that include 40 shutouts in an eleven-season major league career with the Yankees.

Stottlemyre, returned as a pitching coach when Joe Torre was hired as manager. Stottlemyre’s tenure lasted throughout the modern Yankees dynasty, winning four World Series from 1996-2000 and advancing to two more. He resigned after the Yankees were eliminated by the Angels in the 2005 ALDS, and earned a plaque in Monument Park in 2015.
