Members of the Florida Marlins are experiencing a different side of life as they visit troops in the field in Iraq. GM Larry Beinfest, manager Fredi Gonzalez, players Chris Coghlan and John Baker and four members of the team’s cheerleading squad make up the touring party which travels by Black Hawk helicopters between bases in Iraq and Kuwait, bringing some cheer to soldiers deployed there.

1992 – White Sox C Carlton Fisk hits a triple in Chicago’s 6 – 2 win over the Brewers. He becomes the oldest player to hit a triple, at age 44, since Pete Rose hit two in 1986 at age 45.

Atlanta snaps an 11-game losing streak with a 6 – 5 win over the Padres and moves back within 1 1/2 games of first-place Los Angeles in the National League West. Atlanta had held first place since April 27th before the streak.

August 14, 1982

The Rangers’ excellent but injury-prone outfielder, Josh Hamilton, is headed back to the disabled list after fracturing his humerus bone just below the shoulder while sliding at home in the 1st inning of today’s game with Detroit. Hamilton is out on the scoring attempt, and the Tigers go on to win the game, 5 – 4, when Miguel Cabrera singles off Darren O’Day with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 9th to break a 4 – 4 tie.
