November 13, 1985: The New York Mets and Boston Red Sox make a 8 player trade Calvin Schiraldi, Wes Gardner, La Schelle Tarver and John Christensen to Boston for Bob Ojeda, John Mitchell, tom McCarthy, and Chris Bayer.

“WE WANTED both Gardner and Schiraldi,” Gorman said. “They are big, strong, and we think both are outstanding. I think Gardner can become the best reliever in baseball, and Schiraldi isn’t far behind. “They just didn’t get a chance to pitch for the Mets. We’re looking at Gardner as a stopper, an impact pitcher who can get the last four or five hitters out.

Schiraldi throws 91 and 92 m.p.h. and can start and relieve. Well, have to wait until spring training to decide his role. “Christensen and Tarver also have a chance to help us at the major-league level next year.”

“We feel Bob Ojeda is a quality left-handed pitcher who should complement our present staff,” said Joe McDvaine, Mets director of player personnel. “Our reports on him are good, and we feel that another left-hander on our staff will give us a better balance, particularly against teams that run well.” Ojeda will become the fifth starter on a staff that already includes right-handers Dwight Gooden, Ron Darling, and Rick Aguilera, and lefthander Sid Fernandez. That fifth spot had belonged to right-hander Bruce Berenyi, who missed most of the 1985 season after undergoing arm surgery.

Ojeda will go 18-5 for the eventual world champions and finish 4th in the Cy Young voting. He will pitch for the Mets for 5 years and go 51-40.

Schiraldi also has a career year pitching 51 innings with a 1.41 ERA.

OJeda goes 2-0 in the 1986 playoffs, including two strong starts vs his former team. Schiraldi goes 0-2 in the World Series with a 13.50 era, including the game six meltdown vs his former team.
