On July 6, 1989, Mike Schmidt becomes the first retired player to be elected to start an All-Star Game. The Phillies third baseman, who announced his retirement on May 29, is hitting only .203 this season and decides not to play. A’s OF Jose Canseco, who has not played all season because of a wrist injury, is picked to start for the American League, but neither will play in the game.
