MLB suspends play due to today’s assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King

On April 4, 1968 — Due to today’s assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, most of the major league teams will decide to postpone their Opening Day games until the reverend’s funeral takes place in five days. Surprisingly, the Dodgers, at first, are the notable exception, even though the Phillies, their opponents on April 9th, say they will forfeit rather than play on the national day of mourning.

Wally Yonamine dies of cancer. Yonamine was the first American to play in Nippon Pro Baseball after World War II and later was the first American to manage in NPB. Yonamine was also the first Japanese-American to play in the National Football League, doing so in 1947, four years before he would become a pioneer in Japan.

February 28, 2011

Asdrubal Cabrera hits a walk-off two-run homer off fireballer Aroldis Chapman in the 10th inning to give Cleveland a come-from-behind 3 – 2 win over the Reds. Nick Hagadone had put the Reds ahead in the top of the inning with a pair of wild pitches that allowed Chris Heisey to score. The win puts the Indians back in first place in the AL Central.
