On May 24, 1950 — Nat Clifton’s Harlem Globetrotter contract is purchased by the New York Knicks, making the talented athlete the first black to sign a deal to play in the National Basketball Association. Prior to his career in the NBA, ‘Sweetwater’ played first base for the Chicago American Giants in the Negro Leagues.
