National League is formed at the instigation of William Hulbert

On February 2 1876 — The National League is formed in New York City at the instigation of William Hulbert, owner of the Chicago White Stockings, in reaction to the lack of central direction in the fledgling National Association. The new circuit will field eight teams in its inaugural season and will become the blueprint for professional team sports in North America.

Walter Johnson and Joe Wood are in pursuit of Rube Marquard’s 19-game win streak. Johnson picks on the White Sox for his 14th straight, a two-hitter, tying Jack Chesbro’s 1904 mark. The Washingtonians win, 2 – 0, beating “our meatball expert” (Chicago Record-Herald) Joe Benz with eight hits. A week later Joe Wood will win number 13 in a row.

In San Francisco, Reds pitcher Gary Nolan hurls a 4-hit shutout and hits a 3-run homer as the Reds win, 4 – 0. Nolan’s homer, off Ray Sadecki, is the only one of his big league career.

June 29, 1968

Behind Jim Bagby, the Indians top the Red Sox, 2 – 0, in a Sunday game at home. It is Bagby’s 29th win of the year and keeps the Indians 1 1/2 games ahead of Chicago.
